Angelman syndrome is an illness that affects development and causes neurological problems. Instances of the illness vary, with some patients having severe developmental delays and little to no speech function, to others having mild delays in motor skills. Children diagnosed with Angelman syndrome suffer from small head size, sleep disorders, hyperactivity and coordination issues.
Causes
Angelman syndrome is a genetic birth defect that is caused by an absence of the UBE3A gene which is inherited from the mother.
Symptoms
- Lack of crawling (at 6 to 12 months)
- No attempt to talk or babble (at 6 to 12 months)
- Overly happy and excitable
- Inability to move
- Uncontrolled or trembling movements of the hands of legs
Treatment
There is no cure for Angelman syndrome. Oral medications and different therapies, such as physical and speech therapy, help people diagnosed with the illness function at high levels.
